Additional: Hong Kong has a public holiday on the 1st of July every year to mark the ‘Handover’ or the ‘Return’ (transfer of sovereignty) of Hong Kong to the Peoples republic of China. Britain had taken control in 1841 and ruled until 1941 when Japanese forces took control. Japan’s occupation of Hong Kong lasted until Japanese surrender at the end of World War II (on the 15th of August 1945).  On the 1st of July 1997 British rule of Hong Kong ended and her sovereignty returned to China.
